BECK IN THE USA
DAVID BECKHAM has agreed a sensational switch to Major League Soccer side LA Galaxy. The ex-England skipper will join the US outfit this summer when his contract at Real Madrid comes to an end.
Becks, 31, rejected a new two-year deal at the Bernabeu to agree a five-year contract — understood to be worth an incredible $250MILLION.

Zidane rocks the movie screen
Soccer fans have always considered the Beautiful Game an art form, and the U.S. premiere of Zidane: A 21st-Century Portrait at New York’s Museum of Modern Art goes a long way toward showing why. The 92-minute reel chronicles Zinedine Zidane’s every ball strike, spit, and grab during an April 2005 match between Real Madrid and Villareal. What distinguishes the movie from, say, a well-shot game on ESPN is that the filmmakers used 17 different cameras trained exclusively on their subject. The film’s only sounds are the crowd’s intermittent roaring, Zidane’s breathing.

Zidane - Official Statement
07.12.06
"I reacted badly and I would like to apologise for it,' Zidane told Canal Plus. 'I would like to apologise because a lot of children were watching the match. I do apologise but I don't regret my behaviour because regretting it would mean he was right to say what he said. 'There was no tension with Materazzi before or during the match.
'He just put his hand onto my shirt and I told him to stop. I told him that if he wanted it I could give it to him at the end of the match. 'Then he said very harsh words to me and repeated them several times. more >

Barcelona-Chelsea Review:
Cracking second half! I thought the Blues were going to weather the Barca storm until Eto'o sealed it. Great ball from Rafa Marques. Could Cech have cut out the cross? Maybe, but Carvalho was clearly beaten. The Catalans deserved the goal anyway, after taking the game to Jose's men after equalising. Think about it - Big John Terry bundled Larsson's chance away before he could steer it into the empty net and also cleared another close shot off the line. Not to mention the brilliant Messi's bender that smacked the bar.

Barcelona is simply the best attacking team in the world and they showed it today. Rijkaard made a smart move by bring on Henrik Larrson as a second striker. Once he entered the match, Barca seemed to turn things up a notch and were the better team. I guess the swampy pitch (that Chelsea reporedly watered before the game even after it rained last night) didn't favor the Londoners after all.

It will be interesting to see what Mourinho does at the Camp Nou in 13 days. Prior to today's match, he said he would have been happy with a 0-0 draw. I'm sure he'd even take 1-1 now but he doesn't have that luxury. Chelsea will have to go at Barcelona in Spain and rely on Terry and Cech to anchor a backline that will surely be subject to counter after counter as the Blues try to get forward.

I say Barca will avenge last year's Champions League exit to Chelsea and might even win it all if they can shore things up a bit at the back. No question they can score goals but that old adage, "Defense wins championships" still holds true.
                         - Playboy Winger - Baltimore, MD

2006 World Cup
Qualifying weekend

October 08, 2005

A total of 23 teams go into Saturday's World Cup qualifiers around the globe with a chance of securing a place in next year's finals in Germany. Depending on how the results pan out, as many as 15 could see their dreams become reality as they attempt to take their places alongside the 10 countries already through which include the host nation and world champions Brazil. The Netherlands, Portugal, Italy, Ecuador, Togo, Ghana and Tunisia are among those who need just one point to qualify. Others, such as Senegal, surprise quarter-finalists in their first World Cup finals in 2002, and Ivory Coast, hoping to reach the finals for the first time, must win and hope others slip up if they are to succeed. Almost 40 qualifiers are being played worldwide on Saturday followed by another full round in Europe, South America and CONCACAF, the North American and Caribbean zone, next Wednesday. By then the identity of 27 of the 32 finalists should be known with the five outstanding berths to be filled in November's play-offs.
